Attribution & credits
PenPath's maps, marathon routes and location-based artworks are drawn from data contributed by thousands of volunteers around the world. This page credits those sources as required by their licences.
Map data
Base map geometry, streets, waterways, parks, coastlines, railways, buildings, comes from OpenStreetMap. OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors and is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL).
The cartography you see on PenPath, the line weights, colours, layering, simplification and layout, is our own work, drawn from that underlying data. In other words, our maps are based on OpenStreetMap data; they are not a copy of any OpenStreetMap tile.

Place search
When you search for a town, street or landmark on our design pages, the lookup is powered by Nominatim, the geocoding service operated by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Search results are © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Marathon routes
Route GPX files are supplied by runners and event organisers. They are overlaid on OpenStreetMap-derived base maps and simplified for plotter output. The base map credit above applies to every marathon poster.
On printed posters
Every printed and exported map from PenPath carries a small "Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors" credit line, so the attribution travels with the artwork.
Other credits
- Ephemeris data for birth charts is computed locally from public astronomical formulae.
- Wave portraits are generated from the audio files you upload; no third-party data is used.
